It’s a place where you can access selected published writings by Carrie Miller. You will find some of her weekly ‘Real Lifecolumns for The Spectator Australia, opinion pieces for The Punch and other national publications, articles about contemporary art featured in magazines such as Art Collector, catalogue essays for artists, and contributions to The Art Life. 

Carrie has written on a broad range of topics including current issues in contemporary art and the ethics of contemporary culture, with a particular interest in the problem of responsibility.

This site brings together the various elements of Carrie’s writing and research practice so you can get a feel for some of the common themes that run through her diverse body of work.

Carrie Miller is an independent writer and occassional curator.

Carrie has been an art writer for twenty years and has written profiles, reviews and catalogue essays for some of Australia’s leading contemporary artists.

Since 2000, Carrie has also contributed to national publications such as Australian StyleNew  MatildaThe Punch, and The Spectator on a broad range of other topics, particularly on the ethics of contemporary culture. For more than two years she wrote the weekly column, ‘Real Life’, for the Spectator Australia.

In 2012 she co-curated Transmission with internationally acclaimed Australian composer Dr Matthew Hindson at Campbelltown Arts Centre. The exhibition paired visual artists with musicians and composers in order to create an interdisciplinary work.

In 2015 she curated two group shows on the subject of crime, Doing Time, at Verge Gallery, Sydney and Exhibit A, at the Lock Up, Newcastle. The exhibition included an academic symposium organised by Carrie and moderated by Dr Andrew Frost.

Carrie also interviewed artists and curators about their exhibitions for the In Conversation with Carrie Miller series at Blacktown Arts Centre – a live chat that was also available as a podcast on the Centre’s website.

She has worked as a research assistant on several academic publications and research projects for academics at the University of Sydney, Macquarie University and the NSW College of Nursing, and as a media consultant to the ARC Centre for Excellence for the Creative Industries and Innovation.

Carrie received a BA (Philosophy and Fine Arts) and a First Class Honours degree in Philosophy in 1998 from the University of Sydney. Areas of theoretical interest include critical feminist theory and critical criminology, theories of subjectivity, political philosophy, philosophy of law, theories of justice and responsibility, crime and the media, gender and the law, and mental health and the law.

In 2015 she completed a Certificate IV in both Mental Health and AOD at Wollongong TAFE. She is currently undertaking a Masters of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) at Charles Sturt University.
